Foreign Correspondents

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the legal authority to accredit foreign journalists in Romania.

Upon arrival in Romania, foreign journalists are requested to come in person for accreditation to the Communication and Public Diplomacy Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Necessary documents for accreditation:

Accreditation letter from the press agency, written in English or French, and addressed to the Communication and Public Diplomacy Directorate of Foreign Affairs. The letter will confirm the journalist is employed by the respective editorial office as a permanent correspondent in Romania. The letter will include company's heading, dated signature and seal of the director.
The letters addressed "TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN" will not be accepted.
Press agencies with a Bucharest office will send accreditation requests both for the manager and for the other members of the staff.
In the case of free-lance journalists, they are required to submit accreditation letters from at least two press agencies or from the board of directors of the professional association they belong to.

  • Curriculum Vitae of the applicant to include: date and place of birth, nationality and citizenship, education, professional activity, foreign languages spoken, office address and residence address in Romania (phone number, fax number, e-mail address);

As per the above mentioned documents, the  Communication and Public Diplomacy Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania will issue a permanent press correspondent card in maximum 30 working days starting from the registration date. The card is valid for up to one year from the date of issue, with up to one-year extension possibility.

In the case of accreditation renewal, the journalist will present a new application from the sending agency 40 days prior to the expiration date of the accreditation period, accompanied by a copy of the ID or passport / resident ID for Romania, an application form and at least three published materials regarding Romania (or a list of titles of audio-video materials produced during the accreditation period). The waiting term for extending the correspondent card is of maximum 30 working days, from the date of registering the documents and the extending accreditation period is valid up to one year.

In case the press card is lost, the foreign correspondent is required to contact the Communication and Public Diplomacy Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to announce the loss in a Classified ad. The journalists will bring the published ad and a photo to the  Communication and Public Diplomacy Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a new license issuing.

On the basis of a letter addressed by the Communication and Public Diplomacy Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Romanian Office for Immigration of the Ministry of Administration and Internal Affairs, the foreign journalist will present the press card issued by the  Communication and Public Diplomacy Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the Romanian Office for Immigration in order to have the stay visa extended.

Family members are not entitled to press license.

Family members are to receive stay visa or residence permit according to the laws in force.

The foreign correspondent is requested to contact the Communication and Public Diplomacy Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in case any of following changes occurs:

  • change of phone, fax numbers, or e-mail address;
  • change of the sending press agency;
  • end of activity in Romania.
